A teacher Sarang Sher sexual abuser was released on Thursday 27, 2023 in Thari Mirwah, District Khairpur, Sindh. Sher was charged with sexual abuse in July 2020 – he abused his students on the pretext of tuition during COVID-19 lockdown.
Three years ago, a video went viral in which was seen him abusing a student. Now, after three years, the local court led by Female Judge freed him by saying that the evidence are unsatisfactory.
A picture of Sher, in which celebrated his release while wearing garland – caused anger over social media and criticized the judicial system and Sindh government.
It is said that local authorities help him be freed and DNA test reports were changed, besides, the victim’s family was pressurized to make a compromise.
The Sindh government legislated “The Sindh Child Protection Authority (Amendment) Bill” on May 24, 2021: a bill speaks about the protection of children, further; the provincial government has a website regarding Sindh Child Protection Authority on which people can have some information regarding the bill and claims about children’s protection.
Whereas, the website does not have a list of how many abusers have been convicted. Furthermore, no condemnation is issued over the release of Sarang Sher.
Child Abuse Cases in Pakistan
Sexual Abused of Children is on the increase every year in Pakistan. More than 10 children, every day, are sexually abused in Pakistan, the Sahil organization claims; in 2022 during six months across Pakistan, 2,211 child abuse cases were reported. 51 percent of girls are abused and 49 percent of boys are.
Further added Sahil: out of 153 Child Sexual Case (CSA) – only four were convicted – 43 cases reached a compromise – and 150 cases are still pending, in 2022.
More Child Sexual Cases go unreported in the country. For instance: in Sindh province, the government credited itself for legislating Child Protect Bill but even the bill cannot hold Sarang Sher accountable for his crime.
